Cold Dark Matter

Apparently two thirds of the known universe is invisible, it's there and yet it isn't.
The invisible nothing which holds together the everything else. I suddenly realised what I had been missing.

Meantime, we have been searching this cold dark emptiness for luminescent beings and answers in the void, probing distant worlds for the remedy to our terminal loneliness.

In my own hobby-kit world of pathetic gestures and ultra short-term archaeology, I began searching a little closer to home.

The footage was captured using an infra-red camera mounted on a remote controlled vehicle exploring the void spaces above suspended ceilings.

There is a secret realm just above our heads, concealing the electrical conduits, ventilation ducts and the detritus of architectural necessity. Modular units of emptiness. This space only becomes relevant when it fails and fractures the illusion of seamless architectural efficiency. A bit like earth-crossing asteriods.

The remote exploratory vehicle is linked to a live monitor in the exhibition space and controlled by the viewer.
This interactive connection enables the public to experience the illusion of control and gradually become aware of a world beyond their line of site.

This piece can be readily adapted to make detached, pointless observations of many other areas such as the underside of floorboards, wall cavities and locked cupboards.
